A machine will simply follow the rules that it is given to start a process and go through it. A machine never inspects or qualifies its work so far. A machine won't notice patterns on it own. It won't draw any conclusions or even hypotheses regarding the computation process or the results.
Machines stay within the system. They are incapable of regarding the system from outside. They are not aware that such a viewpoint exists. Even if a machine was programmed to look out of the system (so as to check some conditions or do anything else), for it that will still be part of the system and part of the computation process. Humans on the other hand often cannot help viewing the system from outside. Humans tend to pause the computation and examine the work, judge it, and draw inferences from it. A human will not tolerate going through the process for a significantly long time without seeing the purpose of what is being done, without knowing the goal, without constantly evaluating the work done so far and identifying if the result has been reached, whether or not it will ever be and how close is s/he to reaching it. Humans don't really need to stop computing so as to examine the current state. More often than not, they are examining and evaluating the work as it is produced(i.e. in real time).
